Wallowa Lake Oregon

Wallowa Lake Or is a great place to take pictures of wildlife.Wallowa Lake has a rich history dating back to the days of Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce Indians. When the gold rush began and the Wallowa County Oregon area started being settled by miners, the federal government and the Nez Perce got in a dispute over who owned the land. Once the land was claimed by the government, the Nez Perce retaliated by killing some white settlers, starting a long battle between the two. Chief Joseph and his tribe eventually surrendered, but were exiled from the Wallowa Valley. A monument to Chief Joseph and his people can be seen at the base of Wallowa Lake. This confrontation is is marked as one of the most influential battles between Native American Indians and the US Government.

Wallowa Lake is surrounded by the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area, and is nicknamed "The Switzerland of America". Wallowa Lake is approximately five miles long and one mile wide. The depth of Wallowa Lake is approximately 283 feet deep.
